Rocket

Crypto Investment App

The Project
The Visual identity for US-based Cryptocurrency Investment App.

The Team
I did the identity, Illustration and Motion. Kartik Tyagi was the principal designer for the ui/ux on the app.` Anish Soni assisted me with some initial explorations for the logo and Illustrations

  1. Defining The Brand Personality

Rocket was an investment app that was envisioned to be a high-risk, high-reward kind of product for a young generation with an appetite for exciting opportunities.
We went through lengthy branding exercises to define the personality for Rocket

The Outlaw
Rocket embodied the spirit of adventure and exploration. Rules are meant to be broken, norms are meant to be challenged and Rocket is here to pioneer a new reality.

2. Creating an Identity

Rocket needed to stand out, be bold, and be inspirational.
I initially envisioned four directions and mood boards my fellow designer, Anish, and I could explore

Rocket couldn't be too common but also not too posh- There was a sweet spot somewhere in the middle that Rocket needed to occupy and it need to start with getting the logo right.

We shortlisted 4 options-

  1. Galaxy

A derivative of the concept of “Rocket”, the symbol visualises an exciting journey for brand - Exploring a cosmos made of a variety of tokens to choose from.

3. Eclipse (by Anish Soni)
Eclipses in astrology are known for being major harbingers of change. They bring fast-paced shifts, shocking revelations, sudden endings, and swift new beginnings to people’s lives.

  1. Afterburner

Afterburner is an auxiliary burner in which extra fuel is burned in the exhaust of a jet engine, to increase thrust.
This symbol denotes speed, power and energy.

4. Take Off

Take off symbolises the start of a fiery journey to explore the edges of the cosmos.

Neatly contained inside a clean shape, this symbol scales proportionately to any size

We chose route no 3. Afterburner -  A narrative-based direction.
Afterburner is an auxiliary burner in which extra fuel is burned in the exhaust of a jet engine, to increase thrust.

A symbol that denotes speed, power and energy- The Afterburner mark captured the dynamism that Rocket embodied.

  1. Illustration and Colours

Rocket gave me a lot of freedom to experiment from style to palette. The first two bright, Pink and Yellow geometric illustrations, by Anish Soni. The other three by me.

Eventually, we chose to create a surreal world in outer space. Think Salvador Dali meets Nasa.
The black and white added a thrilling sense of the unknown.

But we needed more — a little zing. A small glow in our illustrations added a hint of colour to our otherwise greyscale landscape and helped us focus attention on the main subject of our compositions.

  1. Motion Graphics

Motion in Rocket was reserved for loading and success pages. The motion was subtle and meant to support the illustration, giving a clear indication of what the page was for.

General Loading state
I first created a general loading animation that would be used for various waiting states.
The initial direction was less surreal and more anime eyes but the idea of an eye floating in space looking for whatever was loading, seemed spot on.

The final all purpose loading state was a wonderfully eerie eyeball planet
Success and Failure states

The animation for these states was considerably simpler to keep the focus on the message while keeping the overall theme of surreal space consistent.
This was a very unusual brief and I think everyone had a lot of fun working on it.
It's rare to work on things where stakeholders are cool with creepy, abstract illustrations - A personal favourite
